Rise of the Inferi
A downloadable game for Windows
“Hogwarts is safe. If anyone’s still listening...
The Ministry has fallen. No help is coming.
The streets are overrun, and the dead grow in number every day.”
You are Viktor Krum, last remaining son of Durmstrang.
After a perilous trek from the frozen north to Hogwarts, you have reached your journey’s end.
But this place is not as you remember it.
The Veil has been torn, and the dead have risen. They cannot think, speak or show mercy. And they grow stronger each day, draining magic from the living to feed their endless hunger.
Chaos reigns. There are no more heroes left. Even Harry Potter is missing… presumed dead.
Whether you survive this world’s collapse will be entirely up to you…

Right, so as I’ve hopefully mentioned enough times by now, this is an unofficial, fan-made project being given away for the sweet, sweet price of free.
But, c’mon, of course the dream is to partner up with WB and get this thing officially licensed. Let’s face it, though – they’re probably not gonna talk to a solo indie dev making this thing in his spare time.
So... if you know the right people, or you work for a sympathetic games studio and you feel like taking a chance, get in touch! With a studio backing the project, together we could approach Portkey for real and try setting up a licensing deal where everyone’s happy.
Getting to release this thing on the store would be insane. Lifelong dream kinda stuff. And it might actually happen if the right person is looking at these words right now. (Or if you can help get it into the right person’s hands.)
If you can help, shoot me a message! Email’s below and I’d love to hear from you…
If you work for Meta, Epic, Oculus Publishing, or anyone else doing interesting things with games, VR or tech, and you’re hiring... please, reach out! Making this thing all by myself’s been a lonely job sometimes, and it’d be great to start talking to more industry people.
P.S: any journalists or YouTubers out there, hit me up! I’ll happily chat about the making of the project, share some secrets, take you behind the scenes... anything to boost the signal!

This free and unofficial fan project is not endorsed by or associated with J.K Rowling, Warner Bros or Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, but we’re pretty sure Fred and George would approve. All characters, designs, storylines and other copyrighted elements belong to their respective owners, and we solemnly swear to put them back when we’re done. (We’re not trying to make any money out of this and we’re massive Harry Potter fans – please don’t toss us in Azkaban!)
As a fan tribute to the series, this game is for your private, non-commercial enjoyment only, so don’t go peddling it down Knockturn Alley, Mundungus. We’re not charging anything for it and neither are we claiming or implying any rights or ownership over the characters or creations depicted within – seriously, not trying to be goblins here.
Finally, a very special thanks to Jo and Warner Bros for having such a generous stance towards not-for-profit fanworks from the very beginning! If it wasn’t for their extremely (and unusually!) fan-friendly attitude when it comes to this stuff, the world would be a decidedly darker, duller and less magical place.
P.S: if you enjoy this game, please consider supporting the rightsholders by buying the books and the Blu-Rays. Or you could always donate to Jo’s charity for disadvantaged kids, Lumos.
THIS PROJECT IS NOT ENDORSED BY OR ASSOCIATED WITH AND DOES NOT ORIGINATE FROM WARNER BROS, J.K. ROWLING, OR ANY OF THEIR PARTNERS OR AFFILIATES. IT DOES NOT CLAIM OR IMPLY ANY RIGHTS TO THE CHARACTERS OR CREATIONS DEPICTED HEREIN.
AS A LOVING AND UNOFFICIAL TRIBUTE TO THE HARRY POTTER SERIES, THIS FAN-MADE EXPERIENCE IS MADE AVAILABLE FOR YOUR PRIVATE, NON-COMMERCIAL ENJOYMENT ONLY. IT IS NOT FOR SALE OR RESALE AND IS BEING DISTRIBUTED ENTIRELY FREE OF CHARGE.
We’re aiming for a tone no darker than the last two books and movies in the series (which were rated PG-13). This isn’t a horror game, it’s not bloody or excessively violent and though the apocalypse can be a dark and difficult place at times, we’re much more interested in gripping you with the story than giving anyone nightmares.
If you’re familiar with the Inferi from their appearance in Half-Blood Prince, they shouldn’t feel too much more terrifying here – though this is VR, so things are naturally a bit more intense up close. Parents are encouraged to have a quick play through and judge for themselves if in any doubt!

IMPORTANT: for YouTubers and streamers!
I recommend the PCVR version for recording gameplay – the game’s pretty demanding at times, and asking Quest 2 to record hi-res video at the same time can result in a bit of stuttering.
You'll also get a small graphics upgrade - and the game's fully compatible with Air Link, so you can still play wirelessly if you want to!
Also, as of v1.04, it's possible to fully mute all the music in the Settings menu if you'd rather add your own in case of Content ID. Check out the other patch notes here!
Finally, thanks so much for playing, and tag me @GriffGaelwick if you post a video, I love watching ‘em!
Troubleshooting
My controllers aren't working when I launch on Vive or Index using SteamVR!
If your controllers aren't working in SteamVR, you can try either of the following options, which other users have reported to work:
REVIVE:
1) Grab the Revive installer from GitHub here (it's free!)
https://github.com/LibreVR/Revive/releases/
2) Launch Quest Link, start SteamVR on your PC, and the Revive icon should appear in the taskbar. (Or follow this handy tutorial...)
https://www.makeuseof.com/how-to-play-oculus-exclusive-vr-games-on-steamvr-headsets-with-revive/
3) Right-click the Revive taskbar icon, click 'Inject...' and navigate to \ROTI\Binaries\Win64\ROTI-Win64-Shipping.exe
4) The game should launch with the controllers working!
5) If it still doesn't work, try forcing it by navigating to C:\Program Files\Revive, where you'll find the file ReviveInjector.exe. Drag the game executable - ROTI\Binaries\Win64\ROTI-Win64-Shipping.exe - on top of ReviveInjector.exe, and the game should start immediately.
VIRTUAL DESKTOP:
1) Install Virtual Desktop on your computer and follow their tutorials to connect to your Index / Vive.
2) Right click the Virtual Desktop icon in the taskbar and click on 'Launch Game'.
3) Browse to \ROTI\Binaries\Win64 and click on ROTI-Win64-Shipping.exe.
If either of these options works for you, please post here to help me figure out what helps!
If neither works for you, please post that as well. Sorry about the teething issues - it's tough to test when I don't own a Vive or an Index. Right now I'm relying on you guys to help me figure out what works!
I can't install the game using the SideQuest app on Quest 2!
Prior to 24th June 2023, there was a bug with the SideQuest app for Quest 2 (the one you can open in the headset) where the ROTI download failed to install with the error 'There was a problem parsing the package'.
This has now been fixed by the kind folks over at SideQuest, so please update your SideQuest app in the headset if you encounter this problem, and try again. (Also, this bug only occurred on the VR app - the PC app always installed the game fine via USB cable.)
Frequently asked questions
When is the next chapter coming out?
When it’s ready. I know, I wish the game was longer too – but I know where the story’s headed and trust me, it’ll be worth the wait!
On a more optimistic note – much of the hardest and most time-consuming work has already been done! I should get to focus much more on the story (and expanding Hogwarts) in future updates – and quite a bit less on major undertakings like coding a dialogue system and figuring out how to swim in VR.
Can I support the project somehow?
Depends what you have in mind! If you’re a big enough fish (studio, exec, eccentric millionaire) and you’re serious about coming on board, feel free to email me at griffgaelwick@gmail.com.
Can I help develop the next chapter?
Not right now. I’m pretty happy developing this thing solo – the creative freedom can’t be beat! That said, if you’re an experienced Unreal dev, 3D artist, musician, voice actor or something else awesome, feel free to say hello. (I may not reply for a week or two, since I try and stay off socials to boost productivity, but I should see it and respond eventually.) Chances are I won’t have anything for ya right now, but it’s great to have talented friends!
Can I help beta test the next release?
Not right now, but I do plan on holding limiting beta tests in the future for upcoming releases. When that happens, they’ll be announced via devlog here on Itch, and on the Discord server!
Are the original Quest 1 or Oculus Rift supported?
Theoretically, yes – the Oculus runtime has good backwards compatibility for older systems. That said, I don’t own either system and have only tested ROTI on a Quest 2, so short answer - try it and see! If you get it working, I’d love to know how it performs.
Are the Valve Index / HTC Vive / Pico 4 supported?
Experimentally. The game was designed and tested on Quest, so that's the native platform – but it’s built using the VRGK base, which theoretically has support for anything that can run Steam VR.
I've tested the game by launching it via the steps above using Virtual Desktop on Quest, which forces it to run via Steam VR, and it works fine for me. But I don't own an Index, Vive or Pico 4, so can't test it out on hardware. If you're having trouble, please try the steps above under Troubleshooting, and post to let me know if it works - or if it doesn't!

Great game ! It would be great if there were at least Russian subtitles .
hi i downloaded this but when i was in the game it stays on the public notes how can i fix this?
Twitch streamer with 10k viewers played your game :3
Enjoyable
an a amazing game just wondering when more chapters will be out?
So I live in the middle of nowhere where I can't get Wi-Fi until I get my star link satellight so I depend on my hotspot that costs an arm in a leg. I've tried downloading this at least 10 times and it completely downloads only to fail during installation I can't afford to keep doing this is there any reason that could be happening
Hi, this is amazing. If i may ask,w here did you get the hogwarts castle you used?
Really impressive work on this.
Quest: The OBB file goes here, if needed:
/sdcard/Android/obb/com.GriffGaelwick.ROTI/
You can make it MMO in the future and all players will attend to classes to learn spells and staff.
This game has so much potential 😁
Absolutely amazing!
And you done all of it by yourself!
Your the first to achieve a Harry Potter game, in high resolution, no one done this yet.
Please put some magic, thet we need to learned them like in Harry Potter, just here it's an apocalypse style, so it's will look different, but we have one professor to teach magic, maybe we will see more professors when we continue with the story ;)
I think you're on a 🌊 here 😉,
Keep up the great work!
Thanks Eli! :D You'll definitely be encountering some more professors as the story goes on ;) I just hadn't rigged them for mocap yet, lol. But you'll be meeting Sprout, Hagrid, Slughorn, and a few others I'm keeping under my hat for now! (It's a pointy black one.) And I like the idea that perhaps the professors can help you learn new spells or level up your abilities; might be a nice callback to the main series. We'll see if it fits in with the story, but yeah, could be fun!
An absolutely magical experience! Any plans for some broom flight gameplay in later episodes?
Thanks for the lovely comment! :D And haha, I mean, Krum is canonically the best flier in the wizarding world. It'd be a shame if the story never took advantage of that... *nudge, wink*
Was interested until I realized I had to have VR equipment, lol. It looks good, though, impressive for developing by yourself, that's for sure.
Hey thanks! :) Yeah, not everyone's got access to a headset, but hopefully that's where the YouTubers come into play...
For the SteamVR users, if doesn't work, use Revive with \ROTI\Binaries\Win64\ROTI-Win64-Shipping.exe
Hey, cheers for the info - I wanted to test with Revive but don't own an Index or Vive, sadly! Any chance you could give a bit more detail for people who've not used Revive before (or just upload a quick screen capture and I'll update the FAQ?)
If you've not got time, no worries - have just been hoping for someone to come along who can help test this stuff! Thanks either way :)
It's quite simple, after installing revive, in the installation folder, you will find the file ReviveInjector.exe. Then you drag your game executable \ROTI\Binaries\Win64\ROTI-Win64-Shipping.exe to ReviveInjector.exe and your game will start immediately.
awesome dude.
Thanks man! :D
I will defiantly play more of this when oculus fixes air link, I mostly use virtual desktop and my Pico 4 but that isn't working for this one unfortunately.
Oh, hey, funny you should mention Pico 4 - someone on the Discord just got it working with Virtual Desktop! Apparently the trick is to right-click the Virtual Desktop icon in the taskbar, click 'Launch Game', then browse to \ROTI\Binaries\Win64 and click on ROTI-Win64-Shipping.exe... if you try it and it works, lemme know!
Thanks man I will definitely give that a go.
cheers dude got it working thank you.
Nice one!! And thanks for recording a video :D I love watching these.
Nice dude, pretty damn cool. I hope you can continue this!
Thanks a lot! :D I hope so too, haha.
